The Agurban: From Boomtown Institute April 28, 2009 by Betsey Merkel.
Categorized as Dialogue & Inclusion. Not tagged.Moody's Job Outlook
Moody's,
an economic consulting firm, recently released a study that looks at
state-by-state job growth over the next three years. It's a good news,
bad news scenario. The good news, Moody's predicts that overall in the
United States, we should see job growth by mid-2010, with total jobs
growing by approximately 11 million through the end of 2012. The bad
news, we won't see job growth in the U.S. until mid-2010.
An
interactive graphic shows last year's actual job growth/loss and
Moody's Economy.com's forecasted job growth/loss for 2009 through 2012,
in total and by sector. It covers every U.S. state and 384 metro areas,
subdivided into fourteen industry sectors, including manufacturing,
construction, and financial activities. The data is seasonally
adjusted. Check it out here.
The
outlook for individual states and sectors varies widely. It is
encouraging to see the turnarounds predicted for all sectors.
At Agracel,
we are seeing a marked increase in inquiries for new facilities, with
companies looking out two and three years. We firmly believe that the
bottom in the 08/09 recession is close or has passed.

Dear Workforce3 One Community: Spring is in the air (at least for most of the country), and the 39th Annual Earth Day celebration has just occurred. There has been a great deal of on-going focus on Green Jobs and a lot of creative and exciting initiatives are happening all over the country. In this month’s newsletter, we have identified several new items that focus on "Green Jobs." We also provide a brief summary and overview of the recently-launched ReemploymentWorks! Community of Practice. If you have a program or initiative that could be replicated across the country, please submit it to Workforce3 One. | ReemploymentWorks! Community of Practice |
ETA has launched a Community of Practice (CoP) called ReemploymentWorks!. Significantly expanding on the original “landing page” developed for the ReemploymentWorks! Summit held in Baltimore in January, this CoP now fully exploits Web 2.0 technology and its networking features. ReemloymentWorks! is rapidly morphing into a full, interactive communications center and workforce system "switchboard" with blogs, discussion and chat features, a calendar, and other offerings to support our mutual efforts to assist American workers in regaining jobs. The site continues to house tools, files, and PowerPoints distributed at the national and regional conferences, Q&As related to reemployment, links to archived Webinars and other Workforce3 One resources. What’s new and attractive are the interactive features that enable our Community to share promising practices, lessons learned, and other technical assistance using blogs, comment and discussion threads and other tools such as wikis (collaborative Web-based tools designed to enable anyone with access to contribute or modify content). Part of our mission is to connect the Community of Practice to other ETA technical assistance endeavors, and to house already-available content while sharing peer-to-peer insights using this Web-based interactive forum. The site can be reached through Workforce3 One, behind the tab for "Communities" or at http://reemploymentworks.workforce3one.org/ |
| Regional Recovery and Reemployment Forums |
The Employment and Training Administration is holding six Regional Recovery and Reemployment Forums through early June, 2009. To date, two forums have taken place in Kansas City, Missouri and Boston, Massachusetts. The schedule for the remaining forums is:

Hundreds of Northeast Ohioans are banding together in no-fee, grass-roots clubs to swap leads and lend mutual support during what can be one of life's scariest turns -- losing a job.
Internet-based social groups and employment listings are touted as the latest and greatest when it comes to career help.
But
there's no substitute for getting face-to-face when it comes to sharing

job-seekers, more than 40 electronic documents with guidance on finding
employment, and the steady leadership of an ex-LTV senior manager and a

Their goal is to help a large group of individuals use their computers to land employment in ways other than to generate a compelling resume. The new online initiative, Elevate America, is set to equip close to 2 million people (over the next three years) with the skills needed to succeed in the field of technology."

While on the topic of job losses, USA Today provides a look into job forecasts from Moody's Economy.com. While the new forecast shows U.S. employment growing in 2010-2012, the outlook for different sectors and states varies quite a bit. Take a look at different job sectors via bar chart and map and then filter down by state.

FlowingData: 4 Different Looks at Job Losses During Recessions by I-Open Team.
Categorized as Branding Stories. Tagged with data visualization, job loss and visualization.Posted: 10 Feb 2009 12:41 AM PST
There are so many ways that you can cut a dataset whether it be big or small. Cut it by time, different chunks of time, categories, etc., and you just might get a different story out of your graph. Over on Barry Ritholtz' blog, The Big Picture, debate over the extent of job losses and this recession led to these four depictions of, well, job losses and recessions.
This first one is from Time Magazine, which shows job losses in recent recessions, and what got the discussion started.

This one takes the natural next step and shows job losses is all post World War II recessions:

Now what if we look at the time it took to recover from job losses? Does that give us a better story?

Lastly, here's a look at the recession decrease in employment from the peak of NFP(?) per household:

I'm no economist, but it's clear from the graphs that there is some serious job loss, and probably why Obama is so focused on creating and saving 4 million jobs. However, the severity of the current recession changes depending on what angle you point your camera. Which viewpoint do you think is right?
[Thanks, Barry]
